Damchiya - White Burn
Description
Damchiyas are known for their ornate, meticulous carvings. This particular vintage piece has hand-carved floral designs, horse heads at the corners (a common feature), and metal strapping throughout.
Damchiyas are beautiful dowry chests that an Indian bride's family would create as a gift to the new in-laws at the time of marriage.
The Damchiya would often contain jewelry, silk saris, and valuable textiles. Once in its new home, the Damchiya would be used to store linens, clothing and other household objects. They often contain secret, hidden built-in's for hiding jewelry and other precious items.
Damchiyas are now highly sought after and recognized as unique pieces of art. They are commonly used as a console or for display.
This piece is over 100 years old.
